At the time, the young company was based primarily in California, so they chose a bear originally to help represent their state's official emblem. But unlike his ferocious counterpart, Sleepy is a friendly, furry bear cub, sleepwalking his way from Travelodge to Travelodge. His silhouette is still used on company signs, stationery and flags, as well as on promotional items. There's even a "Sleepy Bear Club" you can join when you stay at a Travelodge.
