A black cat jumping through the number "9" on a silver and red label has always distinguished the Eveready battery's classic 9-volt battery.

This handsome creature is curled around a plastic bank, and is all black except for its white nose, white eyes and a white triangle of fur on its chest. Printed on its side are the words "Save with the Cat," and the Eveready battery logo.

The Story of the Eveready Battery

The "volt," a unit of electrical pressure, was named in honor of Allesandro Volta in 1798. He invented the first battery. A German scientist named Carl Gassner improved upon his idea to invent the "dry" battery in 1888. Two years later, the National Carbon Company began commercial production of batteries. At the same time, the flashlight was being invented by a Russian immigrant named Conrad Hubert (aka Akiba Horowitz). Hubert patented the light and organized the American Eveready Company. In 1914 they merged with National Carbon, and were later bought by Union Carbide.

Since then, new and better batteries are constantly being developed. In 1982, Eveready opened one of the world's largest battery research and development centers in Westlake, Ohio. The company was purchased by the Ralston Purina Company in 1986.
