Of all the animal characters used in advertising, Fido is a classic canine. He's a cute yellow dog (although, here he's represented in white) of unknown breed, with a soft furry face, big friendly eyes, a little wet nose, floppy ears, and a long tongue that's ready for a "licking." Who could resist him? He's everybody's fantasy of the perfect pet.

In the 1950's, the Quaker Oats Company used Fido (and his friend FiFi) to promote their line of Ken-L-Ration pet food products. (FiFi graced the packages of Ken-L-Ration's cat food.) Traditionally, dogs have appeared in advertising since the earliest times, because they typically inspire trust and friendliness, and are seen as faithful companions to their products. Fido is one of a long line of advertising champions which includes Nipper and Chipper, the Mack Truck Bulldog, Greyhound Bus's greyhound, and the Hush Puppies basset hound, etc.

Here, Fido is posing as a coin savings bank, with a jaunty red beret perched on the top of his head.
