Willie the Kool penguin skated onto the scene in the early 1930's, when Kool Cigarettes were first introduced. The cigarette's manufacturer, Brown & Williamson, thought that this cool character would be the best one to portray their product's unique menthol taste.

So Willie appeared on billboards, in print ads, and on the radio throughout the 30's and 40's. When television beamed into American households during the 50's, Willie made the switch to the small screen. His image has appeared on many premium items, and he even met his wife, Millie, while he was modeling for a salt shaker (she's the pepper). He retired a short while later.

Here, Willie and Millie are together again as a pair of salt and pepper shakers. Naturally, Willie the cool bird is the salty character in this relationship. Millie is the pepper.
